How do you feel the media has portrayed the war in Iraq, Afghanistan and all other....?

I have been watching the local news from the beginning of this "engagment" and I am completly appauled by the way the media portrays the progress there. I have a few very good friends overseas and they tell me the "good" that is happening...tyrannical govornment regimes are abollished, clean water is established to citizens, better housing/living conditions, and "freedom". All we hear back in the US, is about the body-counts, the bombings, the unrest. It makes me almost physically sick. I am so damn proud of my country and the selfless men and women risking their lives and leaving their families to serve and protect and instill our values at home and abroad, and it has been truly sad, what has been informed of as "news."

A different posting on here had a question asking why people were protesting outside of the home of a soldier that was sent home to be burried. -I mean, how "fuck3d" does a (not even a person, by my standoint) have to be to do such a thing?! To me, I would releases some serious lead on them.

-But, is that because they are so missinformed of the good being done? Are they mad at the war and taking it out on the soldier?

I am really confused and angered by the way some civilians respond and think of what happens, but is it directly an effect of the media or is it just a bunch of people that should have been aborted? The REAL clinker in this whole deal, is that they have a constitutional right to do so....blood and lives have been shed for "this" ability to do so.

Somebody, please shed some light on this. Give me your thoughts.

-The short story, I guess, is: "what do you think about the information being given to the generalized civilian population."

ya that's why I'm sick of the news. I turn it on and I have to listen to "3 soldiers killed in a car bomb...in other news, a 3 year old boy drowned in his bathtub this morning..." They focus on death and destruction, they throw in a little "personal interest story" about cancer survivors to boost viewer morale.

As for the person protesting the soldier's house...I find that to be absolutely disgusting and that person needs to be smacked..but it IS their freedom of speech. The same freedom that our men and women are trying to bring to the other countries.

In some ways though...the media is only reporting on what they know, and to their credit I have seen quite a few good news reports that focused on humanitarian aid and rebuilding, as opposed to destruction.

The media will only tell you what THEY want you to hear. Good or Bad, and in most cases bad. The media is SO biased. If something good happened in Iraq or Afghanistan I doubt CNN would report it. I only watch Fox becasue whether people admit it or not, they do give BOTH sides. They just dont like the channel because its the only one that will tell the TRUTH, no matter what the truth is.

The media generally either portrays the war negatively, or not at all when it is going well. To fit their political agenda.

the Media is in the tank for the enemy most of the time. They are just foaming at the mouth to break the next war crimes story( while the enemy performs war crimes everyday)
and then they have the nerve to pretend they honor veterans

Have a media blackout F them!!!!

Well to be honest there is no real way of getting news except from eyewitness accounts and C-SPAN. A government network would be EXTREMELY dangerous and a potential propaganda machine one way or the other. The fact is people want to hear what they choose to hear, whether it is supporting the war or not. That is why hard-left MSNBC is in business as well as hard-right Fox. That's capitalism. People have to think for themselves and past the spins of the Rush Limbaughs, Bill O'Reillys, Keith Olbermanns of the world. If they make a conscious decision to agree these people, that is ok. However they should not eat their bs and take it as gospel.

I hate the media.
It's SOLE goal is to make money.
People these days do not want to hear about beautiful daisies blowing in the wind under the bright yellow sunshine, they want to hear about how little Johnny popped a cap on his whole family and then himself. Whatever the public wants, the media gives.
Last time I checked, people found it more entertaining to talk about the negative then the positive.
Funny thing....all the while they were talking about how "bad" the war was going, they were also making horrific movies and comic films that disrespected our dear president at the time.

God Bless America.

The info that the media puts out is for rating only. If all they did was report on all the progress happening in Iraq or Afghanistan, then no one would watch. The media is trying to make money and keep their ratings up by only showing the bad things. Don't believe everything you hear or see in the media.

First of all, look at the media and who they work for. Most of the media networks are owned and ran by left wing liberals. Of course if someone owns a company, they will use the money or their assets to project the view of whoever owns the company. It is like a person that runs a shop in a small town that is opposed to the war. He can hang up peace signs and anti-war propaganda in the windows to exrpess his views. Well, the owners of these "media" outlets are using what they have available to further thier own agenda.

Thier agenda (in regards to the war) is to end the war by making it look like we are losing battle or to bring up all the negative things that come from war. In doing so, the American people who watch these channels for thier daily source of information from around the world will get the sense that the war is pointless and that we shouldn't be there and that all we are doing is losing American servicemembers lives.

They do this by showing pretty much only the violence that is happening in Iraq and talking about the casualties, while leaving out the progresses that we have made and the help and positive changes that we have done for that country. The regular American newswatcher doesn't know anything about what is going on over there other than what is shown to them on the tv. Vets and people that take an active look into what is going on, are about the only people that can see what has chagned and that our men and women have not died in vain. You also have to admit that they use our own human nature against us to get us locked into these channels. It is always more interesting, for some reason, when you see video of soldiers in a firefight or a video of a bomb that just disrupted peace in a city. Doing this captures peoples attention that seeing people talk about how this city in a far away country is now finally getting to feel the effects of having a workable sewage system.

So now that people are drawn to the channel because of the battles on the screen, the tv spokeman is free to tell you what his ideals and the ideals of his superiors are about the conflict. It is stupid and it is totally unfair. Real journalism is supposed to be unbiased and is supposed to give the information from all aspects. But these "journalist" that you see on CNN and MSNBC only give thier side of things. With enough repetition, you will eventually be falling into the world of thinking that they are right and that is what is going on.

No, the media is not misinformed. They have access to more information than you are I. Most of the time, they choose what information to give to you and I.

As for the "short story" question, I would say that for the most part the information being given to the civilian population is just biased information to confuse and pursuade people to follow a cause. It is sickening when you see people like Cindy Sheehan counted as a "patriot". Yes, it sucks that they have the constitutional right to be able to do this. It is really sucky that people have the constitutional right to protest the war at soldier's funerals and outside of the houses of fallen heroes. I support the rights of people, but come one. Whethere you believe in the war or not, is it right to go protest the war at a soldier's funeral who was killed in combat? I mean protest the war all you want, but why trample on his name and grave by carrying signs that say "Thank God for 9/11", and "They should leave his sinful body in Iraq"??????

The media should be used like it should be to show both sides of ANY issue. But the owners of these companies exercise thier right to put out any information that they choose and further any agenda that they choose. And it is totally sickening how they use things like the war to do this. Too bad allt he Amercans can't see all the good things that we have done in Iraq. The medical clinics, schools, and many other additions to the infrastructure that we have made.

It is funny though, how things have changed a little bit over time though. If you notice that there used to be none the good things that are happening overseas, and now you do see some of it, but not a lot. That is because the liberals are totally opposed to the war, even though they were for it at the beginning and are now backtracking everything. Now they have found out that by showing all the bad things, doesn't further thier agenda, but actually hurts it because they show things that gets the Iraqi people more mad at America, thus causing more violence. Now they realize that if they start spreading the word that the coalition forces have done a lot and done good things, that this will show what was needed to end the war. So now they are showing these things on the news now in hopes that this new tactic on ending the war will end.

EDIT: This isn't the first time that I have really enjoyed one of your questions. I have to say that you do ask some very good thought producing questions. I can't wait to see more come from you. And this is a very GOOD question and more people need to be aware of what is going on. Thanks for bringing it up!!!

Depends on if you watch CNN or FOX...
CNN wouldn't be caught dead reporting something good in the war.
FOX will typically report the good but they also know the money comes in when negative news is reported
