How do you explain the vast improvement in Subaru Forester's Engine reliability starting in 2006?

From 2001-2004 Consumer Reports rates Subaru Forester's engine as having far worse than average engine problems. From 2006-present it rates the engine as having far less problems than average. Is this improvement due to a specific change in the Forester's engine? Does this simply reflect that when the Forester gets to be 6 years old its engine tends to have more problems? Please let me know what you think the answer is.
