How do you download multiple songs/apps at a time on an ipod/ipad?

I was downloading apps onto my bofriend'd IPad and it was only downloading one at a time. & yes these are apps threw itunes & the ipad is not jailbroken. Now I know on computers when you're downloading music or apps or both it allows you to download up to 3 at a time I believe (maybe 4) Now how can I do that? I am getting by ipod touch in the mail tomorrow from apple & I have a ton of stuff on itunes. I also want to know how I can do it for the Ipad unless it's the same thing than just say so. other than that, that's pretty much it. if there is not a way to do it by its self is there an app that will allow me to download multiple things at a time?
