How do you do this with PHP?

I am creating a web application using PHP and MySQL. The webmaster must be able to install this application using an installer I built with PHP. They enter their MySQL database name, username, and password, and it creates tables.

That is nice, but how do I make it remember the MySQL db name, username, and password? It can't be done with cookies because it needs to automatically connect when any user uses it. It can be donw by writing and reading a text file, but then anyone can access the file and see the MySQL database username and password, which is unsecure.

Web forums do this. When someone reads the topics, it automatically connects to the database. So how is this done?

If you're hosting on someone else's server and don't have access outside your webroot, you can always put your db password and other stuff in config file and then lock the file using a .htaccess.
