How do you do a flip on a bike in GTA 4?

Every time i try and flip a bike in GTA 4 it always spins sideways and i end landing on my head. I was just wondering if there was a certain way to make the bike stay straight during the flip.

What I do when I flip, is hold my stick until my character is semi flipped, then I let go. He usually straightens out.
