how do you do a fatality on ultimate mortal combat three for Sega genesis?

Ok i have a move list for this game and i know that like no one plays a sega genesis anymore but i love this system and this game. I have the move list but none of the fatalities work. i have checked several moves lists and all have the same button combinations but they do not work. are you supposed to hold block or run or something to make them work
