How do you delete flash drive?

I have a 1GB flash drive and a Mac. My flash drive filled up so I deleted everything on it. Now, its properties read "0 files, 388 KB remaining." I don't understand. If it's a 1GB flash drive and there's nothing on it then how come I can't use all 1000MB? It's completely empty but acts as if it is full.
