How do you count the output of a PHP string code and count it out ? PLEASE HELP!!?

hello, Iam learning PHP , can you please tell me what a LOOP means and also how do you : ( this is what the tutorial says and Im really confused, how did they get 12 and why is it important to know? )



The Tutorial SAYS :

Let's find the length of our string "Hello world!":

<?php
echo strlen("Hello world!");
?>


the output is 12

HOW did they get 12, what was counted, and why was it counted ? can you please explain to me, so I can understand it :)
