how do you change the shifter shaft bushings on a 1974 Harley Davidson sportster?

The engine is on the bench, the trap door is out and the chain & sprocked cover are off. The gearcase has to be opened up again to shim the cam gears. Drift out? hydraulic press? hot/cold? Push old ones out with the new ones?

Don't shim the cam gears. There was a factory service bulletin from Harley (HD Service Bulletin M-0860) about the cam shims. The service manual says to do it but they often end up chewed up and laying in the bottom of your cam chest as mangled bits of metal if you're lucky enough to not move them through the cam gears and bind them up and crack the cases - which is why Harley came out with the service bulletin. It's best to let the cams walk.
I think your bike was the last year for right side shifts on Sportsters? I'm pretty sure I punched my shifter shaft bushing out with a deep socket on the outside of the case and a larger shallow socket on the other side to support the aluminum on the other side.... but it's been a while.

If you don't have a splined shifter shaft this would be a good time to replace it. The stock ones didn't have splines on them and the shift lever can move up and down on the shaft. They make a splined one that is much better.

Don't replace the cam bushings in the outer case unless you absolutely have to. They will need to be line reamed if you replace them
