How do we get a quick appointment?

I called to get a Upper GI done by some doctors at Alexian BrothersMedical Center in IL. They said i have to wait for a month before i can get it done and it's normal for anyone getting an appointment in the hospital. If i wait for a month i dont even know if i'll be alive that long the way things are going now.

So is this normal in all hospitals to wait for so long or how to do about getting a quick appointment? I guess this will be a optpatient proceduce and a doc cant do it in the office right? I haven't been to any gas doctor, got a referal from my primary care doctor.

I had an Upper GI series done several years ago at a local hospital - it was scheduled maybe a week before I had it?

Call other hospitals, maybe they have shorter lists. Otherwise the only way you'll get one sooner is if you are having serious symptoms that much be checked now.

My hubby just had one today. It might depend on the urgency or the procedure. My husband started bleeding Friday morning, called our family doctor, who referred us to a gastro doc, who we had a consultation with and who did the procedure today. That would be 10 days total. The bleeding had stopped a few hours after it started, so this seemed appropriate. If had not stopped bleeding that first day, I would have taken him to the ER.

Are you having symptoms of something possibly serious? If you feel an urgent need to be seen, I would tell your primary for a referral to a gastro.

I wish you the best.

Hope you hubby feels better! How did everything go?

oh well, looks like i will have to wait for a month for the endo. I caled another place yest & they called me in today for the consult visit and the doctor is a real jerk.

He refuses to do an endo saying my symptoms are anxiety related and not related to the stomach. Nor did he even care to inquire about my blood tests reports or any other past tests, etc. Not sure how he can just rule out the entire digestive track in under 30 seconds just when i told him my heart is beating fast along with stomach gas, reflux, burping, bp increase only after i eat. That's a very bold statement tomake without really taking the time to inquire & perform any diagnosis.

The hospital doctor is willing to do it but i have to wait for the appointment.

What did your primary doctor think was going on? If he feels that you need to have an endoscopy done urgently than his office should have booked an urgent appointment. Typically if a doctors office calls to schedule an appointment, the staff will know if the doctor has requested an urgent appointment. Appointment slots are always left open for emergency referrals.

Did you question this doctor on why he thought your symptoms were anxiety related and if he felt that way than why is he agreeing to do the endoscopy?

Check with some friends or family members and find out if any of them have seen a gastroenterologist and could they possible recommend someone to you?

I hope this helps.

Call your doctors office back and tell them you have to wait a month for an appointment at that clinic and you are seriously ill and could your doctor's office call them to see if you can get in sooner or ask for them to refer you to another clinic not so busy. That length of wait is not unheard of but if you are in need of some relief and can only get something depending on this test then your doctor should help you with getting a quicker test. If you are required to wait the month then your doctors office should be able to prescribe something to help relieve whatever symptom you are displaying...at least ask them. Good luck.
