How do sponsors feel when a major sporting event is cancelled due to blue-green algae?

Ok, this is part of a scenario for my assignment on health and wellbeing. A major rowing event occurs annually in a rural town- population is about 50,000 to 100,000. It is the major event on the calendar for the town as it brings in revenue from tourism and marketing. The event is a rowing race and it has been cancelled because of blue-green algae (its a bacteria in spite of the name and secretes a repugnant and contagious toxin- bad for skin and respiratory system if inhaled) being present in the local lakes water. The sponsors have been asked out of the goodness of their heart to help fund the clean-up of the river so future events can occur. An allternative fun run has been established in place of the rowing event. Is it right to assume the sponsors or 'key stake holders' will fund the clean up of the event or they will refuse and quit sponsoring the event? Would they sponsor an alternative event, will the terminate the sponsorship or will the contribute to the 'clean up' of the lake to enable the event to be held in future? thanks
