how do scientist test for global warming?

They call or email Jim Hansen at the GISS group at Columbia University in New York City and request the corrected numbers that prove global warming is happening. As he is the high priest of the cult, his data is always politically correct! The rest of the world is reporting average temperatures as much as 10 degrees below normal currently,

Why the large difference between GISS and everybody else. It is very simple as more than half of the worlds temperature recording stations are now located in crowded urban areas where they were in rural areas 100 years ago. There is a simple process that explains why urban temperatures are warmer than rural area, it is called the heat island effect. GISS checks the variation between current recordings and those of 100 years ago and adds this variation as compensation to all rural readings in the region. All other sources subtract this difference from all urban readings in the region.

So GISS adds the artificial heat island effect to regional rural readings to equalize things while others subtract the heat island effect from the urban readings to bring them more realistically in line with regional rural readings.

They use a number of bits of data.Historical records of air temperature, sea temperature, CO2 atmospheric levels, ice core studies.

However simply linking increased CO2 to Global warming, does not necessarily mean humans are the ONLY cause. There are many other variables.
