How do plants such as trees get there carbon dioxide and produce oxygen?

I was told in school that plants don't breathe, so i was wondering how they give us Oxygen and take in carbon dioxide because if they don't breathe, then I don't know how else can they get air. I know this may seem a silly question but could you please not point it out as it is upsetting, thankyou.
