I would say if your parents used to watch sports when you were young and they favoured a team your most likely going to do that considering your going to grow up knowing there the "best team" or something like that. Or you could be watching a sports game and you will notice really nice plays from a certain team and holy shit they have a nice jersey to! So that also how they can favour a team. Hope this helps.
I guess you just go with your gut.
Usually it is a team that plays from your city or state. Sometimes you will get acquainted with the team through your dad, mom, brother, etc. Sometimes you will see playoffs on TV and get to know some of the team players this way.
Maybe something as silly as the colors will make you decide to choose a favorite team.
Some people love to be on the side of the underdog (the team that is supposed to have the hardest time winning).
Remember, just go with your gut.

Usually people are sentimental towards a team in their home town or they like a certain player or even just like the logo of a team. Also some like the history such as the Boston Red Sox with the curse. And some people will choose whichever team is winning. Those people are called fair-weather fans.
