How do oxidation and reduction relate to changes in oxidation number?

a, both oxidation and reduction correspond to an increase in oxidation number
b. oxidation occurs when oxidation number increases, and reduction occurs when oxidation number decreases
c. oxidation occurs when oxidation number decreases, and reduction occurs when oxidation number increases
d. both oxidation and reduction correspond to a decrease in oxidation number

i answered c but I'm not too sure I can't find any notes backing up this information or any of the other answers
