How do outdoor campers & trekkers defecate?

I like to take a trekking holiday to enjoy nature, but since nature is unlikely to have man-made toilets, I wonder how trekkers and adventure holiday-makers defecate? Do they have to carry shovels as part of their camping gear, to dig holes for toilet?

It's not so much the dump you leave that's the problem. All animals shit in the woods. Nature takes care of that. It's what you clean yourself up with that can cause the problems. Animals don't wipe there butts. If you're not going to wear it out, then use bio-degradable wipe or something from nature. just make sure it isn't something like poison ivy.
