How do Nokia Apps get Updated?

I am used to the Apple iTouch, on which I am CONSTANTLY being offered updates to all the Apps I have downloaded (over the past year): Most of my apps have been updated multiple times, either with bug fixes, changes for compatibility with new iTouch software, and often with improved or new features. NOTE: all of those updates are FREE!:)

Although I am currently pleased with most of my Nokia downloaded Apps, I am wondering how (or IF?) they get updated? I see no provision in the Ovi store for updating them, nor even about receiving notice of the existence of updates. Do Nokia apps EVER get updated? Do users ever receive notices about updates even being available? Wouldn't one expect that Nokia apps are just as likely to be updated as Apple apps?:disappoin

I welcome any relevant information that others can offer regarding Nokia app updates.

Apps from Nokia will update via software update (either on the device or via Ovi Suite)

Third party apps is a total crapshoot. Most of them you need to update manually, if there is an update.

This is definitely something that needs to be tightened up in future versions of Symbian. They should take a hint from the N900 which checks for updates for everything that I've installed automatically once it connects to my home WLAN after I get home from work. Best part about it is that there is no setting for it to do this at this time or when it experiences that behavior, just does it all on its own. I guess it figures "Hey, fast connection. Might as well check for updates"

iPhone updates are available through app store repository and update engine is built into core of the app store. Nokia has OVI store, however, as we know, it lucks so much functionality of Apple app store including application updates. Nokia needs to step up and completely redesign app distribution ecosystem, because at this point it's half-baked. Some developers create update engines themselves and build them in to the apps but it is redundant if it could be done through centralized distribution system.

Some apps, like Gravity for instance, has an update button that lets you check for updates within the app. If an update is found, the app will download the update and install it, all within the app. You then restart the app to activate the changes.
