how do lomography cameras operate/what do you have to do when taking a picture with one?

i've just discovered lomography and im really interested it. im thinking about buying a Diana+ or a Holga CMY. however, i dont know much about the process of taking and developing pictures from these types of cameras. do you need a darkroom? can you take the film to a regular film developing store? what else do i need to know before purchasing one?
