how do i work out what amps, powercaps and things that i need on an in car stereo?

I was just wondering if there is any guideline for what size amp goes with what and how to work it out, also if power-caps are needed? I really have no clue. Also if there are any useful links to go with this it would be good. Oh and any that illustrate how to wire an in car stereo nicely?
