How do I Watch/Record signal From My Subscriber Receiver To My Laptop with My HDMI

Cable? I have a HP Pavilion DV7-3162nr Notebook.The Graphics Card installed is the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200. There is HP Media Smart Software on the computer that can watch live tv. I went for the long shot and tried to run the HDMI cable from the tv subscriber box to the HDMI slot on my computer. I'm guessing the HDMI slot on my computer is "output only" because it didn't work. I was prompted that I had "No TV Tuner Device. No TV tuner card detected. Please check your TV tuner card or add one to use this program." Some questions please. Is the HDMI connection on my computer really just an output only? If it can receive incoming video, what software and or drivers are required? If in fact it is only an HDMI output, what kind of hardware and/or software do I need to purchase to connect the HDMI cable from the subscriber box to my notebook for watching/recording the incoming signal. I Would also like to do the same with my PS3 even though im sure the hardware I need would work for both. Thanks for any replies and i appreciate the help
