The higher the gear you are in, the more difficult it will be to pedal.
For example, if you are going up an extremely steep hill, you will want to be in gear "one" for your front chain ring, and gear "one" in the back.
It makes the distance travelled less, but makes it easier to pedal(higher torque). On flat ground, and for speed, you may want to raise the gear.
