How do I turn off the night time headlights on my 1999 Buick Century?

I need a better answer than "just read the manual," because I have already tried what has been stated in the manual, and it has not worked for me! The highlights come on automatically - - but I want them OFF!

I want to turn off the headlights on my Buick Century at night, so the car can be driven without headlights. How can this be done? Please give me the steps to do this.

They are controlled electronically with a photocell, usually located in the rear view mirror. Some aren't. Why would you want to turn them off?? They will not come on if you use the light switch in the parking light position.
