How do I transfer media from my external hard drive to my PS3?

I have an external hard drive that I use for my PC. I want to transfer movies and music that I have saved on my external HD. Can someone please give me step by step instruction on how to do so? I know that you have to format it a certain way (which I don't know how). But my other question is that if I format it the correct way to be able to transfer things, will it affect the way that my PC recognizes it? If so do I have to change it back every time I do it?
