How do i talk and mingle with people i dont know at my cousins party?

My cousin had a party and i felt so alone because most of the people there were her friends from school and i had no one to talk to. I was thinking of starting up a conversation with one or two of them but my mom and sister were their which kinda killed that idea. If i tried to talk to any of the girls there my mom would have watched me like a hawk and my sister would have just been standing there. My cousin introduced us to some of her friends but that quickly ended. Me and my sister just talked to each other and were on our phones most of the night.

Is there anything i should of done to talk and mingle with the people at the party? Most of them were around my age, in high school. Should i have left my sister and talk to someone? How should i have approached them? I know its kinda late now but for future reference :)

try sitting or standing near someone whos alone or near a small group of people. then if they dont talk to you, just say something like i like your shhirt or something, to break the ice. then ask them how they know the host etc until youre comfortable
