How do I take high speed images at long distances?

I have a Canon S5IS camera that I want to use to take pictures at sporting events, such as baseball games, football games, and especially auto racing events such as the Indy 500. What type of lens should I be looking at to produce a high quality image when what I'm trying to capture is going 220mph and 1/2 mile away? Do I need a lens at all? Thanks!

Your camera is a point and shoot and doesn't take lenses... that's for SLR cameras.

The only thing you can do, I know because I own two P&S cameras and an SLR, is put in all the zoom you've got. If you're in bright sunlight and you have shutter control use 1/1000 of a second.
That will both freeze the action and you won't show any camera movement.
