The first paragraph is an abstract, where you say what your essay will be about and what you will be explaining.

The next paragraphs explain the points - one or two points per paragraph - and examples as well as reference material should be used to explain your points clearly.

Your last paragraph is your conclusion. Where you close off your argument and you show how your essay has proven your point.

have an assignment due but have mental block and have forgot basic structuring. Q is to what extent can we shape our own identity

You start by presenting an overview about what you intend to write. this overview generally contains the major points of your argument and you should also take a position. This position entails showing the examiner that either to large extent or to a lesser etent so that the examiner knows how you are going to present your argument.

You are also expected to define some key terms so that from the beginning you show exactly what you mean.

In the subsequent paragraphs, you present the major points briefly cited in the introduction and expand them making sure you cite the authorities and what views they have about the issue. You are also expected to give examples so that your argue comes out clearly. Are all authorities of the same mind, if not, what is the major point of divergence? Demonstrate how these points add value to your essay. Remember when you are writing an essay you want to present argument not just to list facts. You really need to show your discussion and analysis of the points you rae putting across.

Even if you showed that the argument is valid to a greater extent, you are also expected to show that you know the arguments presented by the other side of the argument. However, do not go on forever showing this other side of the argument, just show the major points and properly cite the source of your arguments.

You must remember to summarise the major points raised in the essay at the end. After summarising you must then draw conclusions and show the examiner that you really did a good job of answering the question. Finally compile the list of references using the format accepted by your institution. Usually Harvard style is used by most organizations
