Something is eating the plants in my garden. I assume its slugs as i can't see any other bugs. They've already demolished a sunflower.
How do i stop them? I don't want to put down anything poisonous as we have pets that may eat them.

Slug pellets from a gardening store.

Also I've heard that slugs will die if they slither over salt.

However you need to keep the salt dry.

well there is a nasty way which wont hurt your pets and you will be amazed at how effective it is ,take some table salt and pour a ring around your plants on contact the slugs virtually exlpode .try it

I've never tried it, but I've heard they are attracted to beer. Supposedly if you put pans of beer out they crawl in and drown.

Get some "Slug and Snail Bait" and sprinkle it on the ground around the plants. I've used it and my dog didn't try to eat it. I don't think he even liked the smell of it. Read the box to be sure it is what you want before buying it. I use it regularly and it works really well.
