my dog is about 4/5, we got him from the trust a month ago. he is lovely and well behaved mostly but does not want to go to the toilet in the garden. we have had a friend come over with his dog and got her to pee in the garden and my dog will pee over it and we praise him lots for it but as soon as the scent is gone he wont do it again and he has never pood in the garden at all.
i have tried keeping him in and letting him in the garden every 1/2hour or so but he still wont go and holds it for ages, it can't be good for him, but after taking him outside the other night i went to shower, change, etc and was just about to take him for a walk when i found he had pood in the house! he had only been outside a few mins before! i did not see him in action so could not scold him for it and so had to clean it and take him out. he never wees in the house, only poo and this has hapoened a couple of times, even when he has just been out on a mini toilet walk! he has spondylosis, which is a fusing of the spine and he is on pain relief and anti inflams. He seems to hold it most other times and has no major problems from the spine issue yet. i need some help!! fyi he is a collie cross.

You WALK him on leash, establish a potty route, go the same route every time.
You don't just put your dog out and expect him to go, doesn't work that way with most dogs.
Walking actually stimulates the urge to potty - get your dog out for walks.

If he's on prednisone (steroids). he will need to drink a lot of water and pee a LOT, so expect that.

Crate training. They also have a spray at the pet store that attacts pets to eliminate in the chosen spot. When your dog does well reward them with a treat

Try using a cage, when you're not training, playing or taking him out to go toilet keep him in this cage and have his bed in there (dogs dont soil their beds), keep a schedule of when you take him out, when you feed him, when you train him and when you play with him and when you put him in the cage (when you're not watching him) hope this helps:)
