How do I stop my dog from whining and barking in the backyard?

We recently took home a dog from a friend of a friend, we had met him once and he seemed as well trained as they claimed he was. Turns out the only things they trained him to do were sit, "wave", and go to his kennel. He is a lab mix and is very hyper. He used to come up to the coffee table and take my daughters snacks right off of it. We have luckily broken him of that and of barking a lot in the house. However, when we put him in the backyard he goes out for about 30 seconds and then starts whining, barking, and scratching at the door. This is especially troublesome during our daughter's naptime because he will bark and whine if outside, bark and whine if in the kennel, and bark at noises outside if he is with us in the living room. I would like to be able to leave him outside with my other dog, who doesn't bark unless Max starts it, more often without getting all stressed about his high pitched annoying barking. Please help!!!
