My backyard area I want to convert to all flower garden just like a veggie garden but flowers, It is 30 by 15. So I am guessing this is the process. Start by spraying the lawn with round up now before it gets too late. I want it to be as ready before winter hits here in zone 7 Oregon. So then I would do what to prepare it ? I know about amending it greatly and tilling it, but when would I do these things and in the areas that are only dirt now, should I water them to start making them softer ? I'm not sure, but I hope someone comes along that has an idea of what I want to do. I know how to grow flowers,I have been growing them and selling them for 15 years, but I don't know what to do at this time of the year to get it as ready as possible to stick the seeds and plants in in the spring, ? thanks

i would sheet compost over the entire area this fall, then till and rake in the spring.

Mow the grass really short.

Lay several layers of newspaper or a layer of corrugated cardboard (like pizza boxes) over the grass. Then pile on leaves, pulled weeds, grass clippings, shredded paper, etc., but make sure it's at least 6" or so thick. Cover the whole thing with mulch or preferably partially-composted leaf mold.

Within a few weeks, the existing grass will have died and no longer be an issue, without the need for herbicides.

By next spring, much of your compost material will have already been worked into the soil by earthworms. The soil will be enriched, will drain better, and will be much easier to till.

Rototill and rake the area, then plant your seeds and plants.
