how do i search for songs/artists on my ipod with alpine cde 9874?

I just installed and alpine cde 9874 in my car. At first I was able to search through everything on my ipod, but now everytime i press the "esc" button nothing happens. If i hold it for a couple of seconds it says "q search" It works fine when i have a cd in and press it. It just doesn't seem to work when the ipod is conncected although it did at first.
