How do i scan a photo, PLEASE HELP I NEED IT FOR WORK!!!?

I have a Canon printer/scanner and i don't how to scan pictures onto my Computer. when i go on control plannel i can see the printer but when i click on it it doesn't work. it just said no items waiting to be printed. i have tryed re-installing it but it still wont work. please help i really need this for work! thanks'
