I lost my one and only key to my van. I called one Dodge dealer and they said that a regular key was (i forget but cheap!!!) and if my key had the lock/unlock buttons it would be something like 50 for key and 50 to program it and PLUS I have to get it towed to the place! I said I dont care about the unlock/lock thing and he said that a regular key wouldnt work in my ignition.
How do I know if I have to have this' SPECIAL key'?
and I cannot afford 200 dollars for a key, so is there something else I can do?
I dont know how to work this yahoo answer thing but I just wanted to say thanks to all who answered me. Even though none of it was good news to me.....LOL!!!!

no ,, they pretty much have you over a barrel on this,,, a regular key can open the doors but not turn the ignition!! you have to have the special key,, however you should try another dealer,, they should not charge for programming, that went out a long time ago as they even include how to program your own key in the owners manual!! get or download an owners manual!

no if its coded key and does have a chip in it your stuck with going to a dealer, even if you order one for it from off the Internet and still have to take it in and have a dealer program it,a regular key wont start the vehicle only open the doors ,sorry for the bad news, most dealers wont charge you to program it ,just for the key is usually all they charge for, good luck.

The only way to find out if you have a special key is thru the dealer. And they are the only ones who can make that key. What you need to do is call the parts dept at the dealer and give them your VIN and ask them to look it up. That will tell you for sure. And yes the key and programing it isn't cheap. You will also need proof of ownership and your ID before they will make any key, I just had to do this and they told me since 9/11 homeland security controls all the documents of keys made now. So just a heads up, you will have some paperwork to fill out.

Take your registration and id to a different dealer. They don't need the vehicle just the vin# to make and program a key. It should run around 90$
