How do I remove a bicycle chain?

Just start going at it with whatever tools you have. I can't think of any common tools that would push the pin out except a chain tool, but you could try:
- Shove a screwdriver in one of the larger holes and get the plate to pop off
- Cut through it with a hacksaw
- Go to your local bike shop and ask to borrow their chain tool

However: You'll probably need a chain tool anyway, to take the extra links out of your new chain.
 
I need to take an old rusty chain off of a bike I'm trying to restore. I don't have a chain remover tool or whatevewr they are called...I need an alternative way to remove it. Anybody???

you will need a chain tool though to assemble your new chain as well as removing links to make it the right length

they are only about $15

you could always try using the old slip joint pliers and hammer, but i don't recommend it seeing as you probably might damage the bike and yourself, you should probably just buy a link removal tool, they don't cost that much
 
Go buy a chain breaker at the local bike shop or Walmart. You will need one to cut the new chain to the proper length anyway. You can grind off one of the pins on the side of the chain and then use a punch to knock it out.
