How do I recover lost photos and work? Vista was erased and XP was put on my

Sony Vaio, I lost everything.? I had Vista taken off my computer and XP put on. I forgot to save my pictures and they were deleted when XP was put on.

Now, none of my laptop feature work with XP. I am going back to Vista, but before I do I would like to recover these photos. Does anyone know how to go about this? Thank you.

Would anyone also know how to go about putting Vista back on/restoring factory setting either?
 
What's gone is gone, they were overwritten and deleted when you installed over the other OS.
