How do I reconnect the alternator in '05 Chrysler Town and Country?

I have a '05 Chrysler Town and Country with a V6 3.8L engine. My husband and I replaced the alternator, but we cannot reconnect the plug. There seems to be plastic blocking them from going together. Is there some sort of trick? There is a piece on the connector that we sqeezed to remove the alternator, but it is not helping the reassembly. PLEASE HELP!! This is driving me crazy. I know it must be something simple.
 
compair the new alt and the old alt together, is the plug the same? there are different amp alternators and the plug might differ...just a thought. There is no trick besides the clip that holds it in, but going back together is should just fit in. Good luck!
