i am readin 1984 for a summer readin assignment. we have to annotate and dialect the text. one of the understandings that we are supposed to have is the tone that the author is creating. but i'm having such a struggle with this! could anyone plz explain to me what is tone, what types of different tones authors can create, how you recognize these tones, and possibly give me examples of tone in literature.
thank you

Yuck!! That sounds horrible! We have to read the Poisonwood Bible and Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde for our summer reading! And we have to annotate both, too.

The tone is almost like the "attitude," or feeling you get. How do you feel? would be a great start. What do you think the author is trying to portray?

Did you know a great author uses specific words, quotes, sayings in their story just to project a certain feeling, or atmosphere, they're aiming to display? Look at the broader picture; what emotion is the author writing with? This applies to the narrative style, too; what do you think the narrator is trying to have us, the readers, perceive, too?
