How do I put html into a text area tag?

I want my friends to be able to copy the <img src"pic link></img> from out of the text area. But each time I do this it wont work. I am using the Ascii table for the chars codes instead of putting the < or the : but for some reason it never shows the closing tag lol It shows the first part <img src="pick link"> but not the last part </img> Can anyone help me figure out why?
I tried <textarea name="piclink"><img src="piclink.gif" /></textarea> and now it wont show the /> lol
ok it shows it all in ie but wont work in Firefox?
 
Image tags do not have a closing </img> tag. The whole thing is:

<img src="piclink" />

For you, the textarea would be:

<textarea name="piclink"><img src="piclink.gif" /></textarea>
