How do I pull engine codes from a 2003 chevy avalanche 1500?

My check engine light keeps coming on. How do I pull the codes? Do I need a special reader or can I do the jumper trick?

yeah auto zone will read and clear them. You shouldnt just clear them though, you could have a serious issue
