how do i plug my stereo into the tv right?

when i plug in the av plugs it only works if i leave them half out and the sound it really low but if i put them in the full way everything is muted wtf is going on?!?! i put it in aux 1 and everything i know it works because it plays at low volume when they're half out how do i fix this?!?!?
