How do I play Net play games on Playstation 2?

I want to play Pro Evolution 5 with other Gamers, it keeps asking for Ethernet network adapter. is that something you buy separately ? Because I have an Ethernet cable but its not fitting in and neither does my USB cable work.
Apart from the idiot, anyone have any useful tips?
