How do I paint my car's engine?

The easiest way to do fine detail work like you are talking about is to go to WalMart and buy Paint markers. I would try auto paint supply stores first. If you can find the Lacquer ones they will hold up to anything.
 
I don't want to necessarily color the entire motor, but I want to add little accents around it. Are any suggestions to what I could use to paint it? Anything that is heat resistant? I don't want to go out and buy expensive engine paint. Does nail polish work for tiny details?
