How do I open a Microsoft Word 2003 file in Microsoft Word 2010?

My old computer had Microsoft Word and Microsoft Office package 2003, I have recently transferred some of my old Microsoft Word files from my old laptop to my recently new and purchased laptop with Microsoft Word 2010, but the files are refusing to open in 2010.

Is there any way around this? I know the basics of computing and formatting Microsoft Word and such, but I don't know anything more technical than that. Step by step information would be greatly appreciated, I don't wish to lose multiple 100+ word documents.
