how do i map out a bike route across the united states?

if i wanted to bike from coast to coast, is there a website i can go to where i could map out a good route? I would need to avoid all major highways and perhaps bike on designated trails for a lot of the time. I do realize it would not be possible to do this the entire way but i'm sure i could link up with some.
 
Veloroutes.org has a decent services providing elevation, and other user created routes.

There is also Mapmyride.com, similar services.
