How do I make sure my lettuce plants don't get over watered in my garden from rain?

I've started my lettuce seeds inside and they've gotten about 1 1/2 - 2 inches and I want to plant them in the garden (It's my first attempt at a vegie garden) but I live in florida where it can rain for days at a time and I want to make sure they don't get flooded with water and die.
What do you suggest? Should I maybe just grow them in pots indoors?

Oh and any suggestions for a good compost or miracle grow or something? Thanks
