how do I make new settlements on islands in civilization 4 ?

Hey I recently bought civ 4 and started a campaign with the german empire. So far so good, but now I want to make new settlements and found new cities across the ocean in america or on other islands. but I don't know how to get the settlers across the ocean, any idea ?

you have to have the astronomy tech, it allows you to build a ship that can travel over ocean tiles. with this you can carry settlers over an water tile. load the settler and then have them disembark on the shore you want to colonize.

the tech is about half way up the tree and has quite a few pre-reqs
