How do I make my Playstation 3 get better Internet? ?

I have roadrunner through time warner. I have the DSL Ethernet going straight from the DSL box to my ps3. I noticed alot of lag when I play like people shooting me before they even turn the corner or killing me after they're dead. I always do automatic set-up when I do my Internet settings. Is there a way to do it manually and open up certain ports to make it better? If so how and ports do I open. I even called time warner they told me to get the $5 a month extra faster Internet I did that but no change.
