How do I know what graphics card is compatible with my PC?

Hi, I have an XP, and a crappy intergrated video card that pretty much can't run anything at all. I don't know much about video cards but I was wondering how do I know if it will work with my computer or not after i buy it? The actual computer is compaq if that makes a difference.. I don't know what the heck PCI is or anything like that. Please help me..
 
go to best buy and ask geek squad. make sure to bring along your pc. they will give you a list of graphic cards, from cheap to expensive and you pick one and go look for it and purchase it. hope this helps.
