How do I know I'm connecting my NON-KEYED 2.5" laptop IDE connector right other than...

...trial and error? The connector on an old IDE (not SATA) 2.5" hard drive has the

black and circuit boardey "bottom" of hard drive

metal "top" of hard drive

I'm connecting the hard drive to one of those "IDE/ATA/SASA - to - USB" adapters so I can get the data off it directly. The problem is the adapter I'm plugging into it doesn't look like this

but rather it looks like this

There doesn't seem to be any indicator as to which end is pin 1, or which way is oriented towards the "top" of the drive as opposed to the bottom. This is especially frightening since I know that the power is supplied along one of these pins (as opposed to desktop/3.5" drives, and all SATA drives, both of which have separate power connectors), and I don't want to plug it in the wrong way and fry any part of the hard drive.

Any ideas? Thanks.
This is what my adapter looks like.

Note the lack of red marking. ... also the lack of cable.
To be clear, the link is not the exact same model and brand as the one I own, but it's very very close. Mine is apparently made by a company called i(DOT)Connect.
