How do I know if i have too much ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) on my 95

toyota corolla dx? One morning when I was checking the automatic transmission fluid I've noticed the oil level was a little above the HOT sign which seemed strange because the engine was not on and was parked all throughout the night. Please let me know if Im checking it right and if not so i can drain some out to drop the oil level till it measures to cold on the dip stick. HELP ME PLEASE! THANKS! Ohhh and also what are some of the problems it might caused to the transmission if I have too much ATF oil on it????
